hobble

I am the Hobbler. A mistress of wordplay. I grab them…throw them against the wall, wrestle their arms into the restraints that will keep them in a perfect position for me to have my way with them. Sometimes they resist, but I know how to make them obey my every command. They love me. They hate me. They will be mine.

I hobble words, positioning them exactly how I want them, until they break the cords and mount me. Forcing themselves deep inside. By the time they are finished having their way with me, I feel dirty and used. I’m broken and bleeding and the worst part of it all is that I’m hungry for more.

Whether I’m playing with them, or they’re playing with me, we need each other. Even when it hurts.

In other words… I’m an aspiring writer who happens to be in a wheelchair. Life plays a little too rough sometimes.

    1. Love you Ruth, and I did write about facebook…it is #1 in my top 5 companies trying to take over the world! You should check it out.

  2. Hi, you’re a really funny writer. Most blogs about people who have disabilities are very sad, moody, ect…

I looking forward to read more from you!

    Bye Sophie

    1. Thank you for your comment. I must admit that sometimes I am pretty sad and definitley moody, but when I write for whatever reason, I just feel happy. Living with a disability can be very difficult, but I think that one of the best ways to handle it is to make yourself and others laugh. Thanks again!

  3. You are a a funny girl! I appreciate your efforts at a blog, I just started one myself. I too use a wheelchair, power chair to be exact, and I have been living in India for the last year and a half. Not the best place to have “issues” but I manage 🙂 Keep up the great work!!

    1. Thank you so much! I am sorry that you are in a power chair also (especially in India). I have often wondered how I would make it in another country, expecially without the motorized carts they have in Walmart and other stores. I hope that everything goes well for you, and thanks for the encouragement.

    1. Woahhhhh, I din’t ask for that…the pressure…ahhhhh :). Just kidding…I actually am used to being idolized. Okay, kidding again, but you are quite a funny girl yourself. Thanks for checking my blog out.

  4. Hi, this is Arlene from donteatdirt. You recently posted a comment asking about healthy after school snacks and I wanted to let you know that I made a post in response. http://donteatdirt.com/2011/08/25/healthy-after-school-snacks/

Also, I checked out your blog while I was here, and you crack me up. I am officially subscribing, because you’re awesome 🙂

    1. Thanks Arlene! Did you see my posts about why I hate to cook? One is funny and the other is serious. I just checked out your blog and the ideas for healthy snacking are great. I thought I’d ask if you know of any foods/supplements that increase your appetite? I have always been really thin, but since I broke my hip my weight has dropped to 87lbs. I think it is the medications I’m on…I rarely get hungry or thirsty. I hope you don’t ming, but you are going to be my nutrition girl ok?

      1. My pleasure.
Not only do I not mind, but I am honored to be your “nutrtion girl” 🙂

Try eating small meals every few hours. Generally your body will process it quicker and you’ll find yourself hungry a bit more often. Plus, if you are eating smaller meals it’ll feel less like you are forcing yourself into eating.
Also, look into a B vitamin suppliment, or a lot of common drinks are using B vitamins now. They will help kick up your metabolism and make your body want to eat.

If you are concerned about not getting enough vitamins due to not eating enough, you can check out Amazing Grass. I highly recommend it anyway, but especially if you just aren’t getting the intake that you should.

Also, exercise will make your body crave nutrients. Even if it’s a small walk around the block. Try to fit that in whenever you can. It should help a lot.

        1. Thanks. I think the small meals would really help…I’m a bit creative (which I say is rebellion in disguise) and I hate forcing myself to do anything. I can’t walk at the moment, but I am going to start physical therapy in a month or so. They are going to inject Botox into my legs to help prevent the spasms and tightness and my physical therapist wants me to get an ESS machine to try to rebuild some muscle tone.

I do think that excercise would help, and I can use a walker which I should probably try to use more than or at least as much as my wheelchair. Anyway, thanks for the help and advice and for being willing to help me out with nutrition.

  5. my pleaseure.
Always feel free to ask anything you like. Also, I have an email newsletter you may enjoy. A lot of times things go out to my subscribers that don’t get posted, but you will always get the posts as well.

  6. Hey, great sense of humor. Where are your books? I know you’ve got some in you!

    RJ

    1. Thanks! I do have some books in me, I am just waiting for science to catch up and extract them from my head. Either that or you could become a publisher (I’m not a big fan of rejection). Seriously though, I appreciate the compliment, but I am on a million medications, and I don’t know how much humor is not drug-induced. p.s. My best friend is an excuse. 😉

      1. Sounds like you could use my dream writer LOL! I entered a contest and can’t remember the exact prompt, but my invention was a dream writer that could take our dreams and make them into books. Something like that, it was years ago and the brain fog has wiped out half my life LOL!

  7. Tag! (Again, I know )

I’ve nominated you for The Versatile Blogger Award!

Go here to read the rules and accept your award if you so desire.

    Congratulations! 😆

  8. A big thanks for the nomination for the VBA! I finally got around to doing a post about it and following the guidelines with my list of bloggers and of course the best part… seven things about me. I couldn’t stop at 7 because, well, it’s about ME! Take a look if you have a moment.. Thanks again. http://off-the-mainstream.com/2011/09/26/award-sharing-time/#more-759

  10. Hi,

I have CP and a sense of humour. Nice to see another disabled blogger out there who sees the funny side, too!

    Lorna

    1. Thanks and right back to you. Usually the only times I post stuff that is boring/emotional is when I am PMSy, but I’ve got to warn you, don’t mention the lack of humor that week…It is just not safe. 😉

    Karen

    1. Thank you so much and I am sorry to hear about your pain. I don’t know about my strength or my humor (I just finished yelling at my kids), but I love to write. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  17. Hobbler,
Just wanted to say thanks for dropping by “http://throughthenet.wordpress.com” and say that it is great to see someone else who is dealing with medical problems with a bit of humor and snark.

While I have not been able to get my docs to give me an actual diagnosis, that is one of the problems of dealing with a public hospital and being on Medicaid, no one seems to have the guts to make a call when it comes to degenerative nerve disorders, I still try and find something to laugh or smile about everyday.

I’ve been told I have everything from MS to Parkinson’s to ALS to “We really can’t figure this out.” So there are days, especially after seeing the neuro that I need a good laugh. I think I found a spot here. Thanks!

    1. Thank you, and I’m glad we ran into each other. Sorry to hear about your health problems. I can’t promise to be funny every day, but I will try to be a little distraction from the pain. 😉

  18. Pretty new look, by the way. 🙂

  19. Hobbles – I created that special award I promised just for you for being my 1000th commentator, it’s on my latest post. You can’t pass this award on, it’s for you only!

  20. Hi…I came to your blog site because of a comment you made on another one…I haven’t read any of your blogs YET..I will..but I wanted to say that I also have MS.. I am fortunate in that I am ambulatory…can’t walk far or very long without difficulties but there are of course the spasms, heat related symptoms and yes the cognitive ones ..especially word finding at times, memory, concentration and well you know for sure….you also seeme ‘down’..maybe I’m wrong..I’ll read and find out…I went through depression off and on…mostly on for most of my life…anyway this is not my life story only to say that somehow I felt led to read your blogs…I just started last Nov. so am fairly new at this….. Diane

    1. I’m so glad that you came by. I understand about the difficulties that you mentioned. I usually have a much more positive…cynical, but positive outlook, but yeah. Depression is kind of suffocating me right now. I have managed to crank out a little humor, but the last week or two has been rough. Anyway, I prefer to write humor, and hopefully I will snap out of this mood soon. Thanks again for stopping by, and I hope you find a little sanity in the madness of my blog. 😉

  21. I struggle with CP, so I empathize with the hard things that have to be faced due to a disability. But I’ve found so much strength through my writing. I can’t wait to read more of your blog. 🙂

    1. I’m sorry to hear that, but writing is such a great way to deal with disabilities. I’m so glad you came across my blog. I will check yours out in a little while.

  22. I like your updated “About Me” 🙂 I’m subscribing because I like your blog address so much. Uber cool 😀

    1. That is a horrible reason to subscribe. I’m not trying to be mean, but it is. You should read the “reasons to stop following me post”. Anyway, I have a feeling there is more than just the blog address though, so I’ll let it slide. 😉

      1. 😆 I’ll go have a read

        1. Okay, but I was just teasing you.

  23. I will see your other posts in a bit. Be careful, but I bet he’s a nice guy

  24. Hi there, I found your blog… let me remember… oh, yeah, from Guap. It was your birthday! Yes! Anyway, I’ve spent some time poking around and reading things and am very touched by your openness and writing. I don’t know everything about you, of course, or your blog, but what I do know, I like. I like the way you write about your experiences. I had a good friend in art school who had lived with disease her entire life. I learned so much from her daily struggles and triumphs. I don’t know if it will be of any value to you, but you can read about her here if you are interested. http://liveclay.wordpress.com/2010/11/10/post-dia-de-los-muertos/ Cheers, Laura

  25. Hi I was given an award an have nominated you for albeit another one..because I enjoy reading your blogs….as a recipient…here is the link for more information

    1. Thanks! I hope all the talk was good. 😉

  29. Hello, you’ve been nominated for The Very Inspiring Blogger Award.

        1. Good now! I’m back to civilization and I’ve been having a hell of a good time with my husband, but I still lust after you. 😉

  33. The Hobbler,
Is it just me or the “Current version” of your About section was recently updated? I was telling a blogger not too long ago:

Do you read The Hobbler? He comes up with interesting posts.
The Blogger in question: The Hobbler is a woman…
    See how little I know?
    Le Clown

    1. That’s okay Clown. This whole time I have been thinking that you were a weird looking woman. 😉

Thank you for thinking my stuff is interesting. Seriously, a lot of the best writers in the world are men, so I don’t mind being thought of as one.

      1. The Hobbler,
I’m a 41-yr old clown… Believe me, a weird looking woman would be an improvement.
        Le Clown

        1. A funny clown…imagine that…

  34. Hello – I thought I was following you – my machine told me I was but I never got any posts – let’s try again…..

    1. Thanks! I’ve seen you around on a lot of the blogs I like. It’s nice to see you here.

  35. Hiya Hobbs,

Just letting you know you were nominated for the Zombie Apocalypse Team. It’s an obligation free award, just some cool zombie bling if you want it. Ya know, designed to help raise awareness for the zombie apocalypse cause. 😉

    1. Interesting…remind me after this weekend. Nevermind, we are both not planners. We should find someone who could remind each of us in a pretty forceful way to do something that we probably still won’t do…

I’ll check soon. Thanks for the nomination, and for the lack of rules.

  36. I hope that you are well Hobbler, and of course
having a great start to your week my friend 🙂 😉

  38. Oh Hobs! its been so long.. I saw you like my recent post and I got excited to see you name! 🙂

    1. I saw your post and was excited too! I’m going to come by your blog tomorrow, but I’m in the grip of ice cream craving, insomnia, and pain, so I’m not trusting myself to write clearly now. Be careful. I saw the storms headed that way on the news a few days ago, and I thought of you. I’ll be over tomorrow to read more about it. Love you!

      1. I actually wasn’t writing a lot lately. I was busy more with kids’ swimming and school. We had the typhoon already and boy it washed out most of the towns it hit. Anyhow, how are you feeling lately? I believe ice cream is such a good cure for anything, insomnia and pain included :-).

    1. I’ll check it out, thanks.

  39. Nice to see that being in a wheelchair is just thrown in as a casual remark at the end.

    1. It’s so obvious in real life, and like it or not, people’s impressions of us are altered by it. Blogging is the one place where people can see the real me, without all the “accessories”. I want people to value my writing enough that by the time they get to the wheelchair part, they see it as an accessory too.

We aren’t our illnesses, but unfortunately the visual world can’t seem to get past them.

      1. I’ve embarrassingly been doing some online dating (it fucking works!) and my ‘tactic’ so to say was charm the socks off everyone. Be super witty and charming and charismatic ALL the time to compensate for my disability. It was quite draining. Oh and also just don’t be a creepy jerk (inflated my ego to see how fucking strange and dick picy guys are).
The girl I’m currently dating kinda over-looked the part in my profile which stated (VERY OBVIOUSLY) that I have a disability so I had an awkward if-this-is-to-much-for-you-here’s-a-guilt-free-door-you-can-escape-through talk with her. Turns out not everyone is as cynical as I am.
In conclusion you don’t need to ‘charm’ people with your writing to compensate for your disability.
And also I disagree. A family friend told me that I have to remember that I am me and not my disability. Bullshit. I am my disability and my disability is me. I wouldn’t be the person I am without it. It’s integral to who I am. I unfortunately have to ‘own’ it and I will. I’m proud (sometimes) of how it’s shaped me to be the person I am now. So on a personal note I feel it’s very important for me to come to terms with that although I’m wise enough in my old age to know what works for me doesn’t necessarily work for someone else.
There is no right way to be disabled.
Sorry for the novel but at least I’m now moist with creative juices; I now have a great idea for my next blog.

        1. You’re right, about both. I don’t want to charm people necessarily with my writing, but I want them to see me as a person first. Good or bad writer, interesting, or boring. Just real before they factor in the wheelchair part. The Ted video on your post is a perfect description of what I want.

        2. By the way, online dating isn’t bad. My sister and her husband met that way. 😉

          1. What’s kinda cool is that I’ve seen the speaker (Stella Young) on television often speaking about disabled orientated issues and, in fact, in person out and about Melbourne.
And I found it hilarious that I stumbled upon her Okcupid profile.
Online dating is probably the norm for the newest internet generation.

  40. Hi. Are you the same “hobbler” who commented on my site in ’11? I happened to notice a different gravatar profile picture and came over to see more, but am confused and wondered if I am at the right place? You seem like a different person! and the site is a total remake!
If this makes no sense to you, I’m referring to the following page (my about page) where, if you scroll down, you will find yourself commenting on my site.
I am amazed, if you are the same person, and delighted to make a better acquaintance, at last!
    The page: https://katharinetrauger.wordpress.com/about/

    1. Yes! I remember you! The master mom. 😉 I changed my pic to a real pic of me instead of the swirly thing. I’m trying to promote my website, dyingwithstyle.org, and figured it would be helpful to have the same pic. How are you doing?

      1. Not perfectly healthy right now, having been exposed to some virus, not the flu, but enough to keep me happy to be reclined underneath this warm laptop, and at home! 🙂
I visited your newly (to me) opened up site and have enjoyed reading! I think I recall a time when I wasn’t among those who could access it. Missed you during that time. Maybe I remember it wrong. Blogging is such work and doesn’t come easily to me. 🙂
Well, I’m happy to learn you did not stop blogging and sell your site name to another person! Ha! Could not imagine what on earth! Thanks for setting me straight! Stop by again sometime, as I will, too, here. ❤ K

          1. Oh, and SO glad Superman rescued you. Imagine being stuck out there forever, just because folks don’t get out…;-)
